More than eight million Canadians consider French to be their first language. In recognition of this statistic and the language requirements of businesses all over the country, the Canadian Institute of Food Safety (CIFS) has launched a Food Handler Certification Course designed specifically for French-speaking students.
This new training program is set to help even more Canadian food businesses protect customers and comply with food safety regulations.
French Food Handler Certification Course
Once enrolled, students will be able to access the French Food Handler Certification Course online right away and complete their training at their own pace. Access is available for up to 30 days, allowing participants to complete the program in a single day or spread out their learning over several days to fit their schedule.
The French Food Handler Certification Course follows a government-approved curriculum designed to equip individuals with a robust understanding of food safety principles that can be applied when handling food in their workplace.
There are 11 interactive lessons in total, spread across four distinct modules.
Module One: Understanding Food Safety
The course starts by introducing some common causes of food-borne illnesses and food contamination, including biological, physical, chemical and cross-contamination. Students will then learn about high-risk customer groups and the actions that need to be taken when handling food allergy incidents.

Module Two: Preventing Food-Borne Illness
This module provides a summary of food safety laws and regulations, techniques for preventing food-borne illnesses, and the importance of good personal hygiene and workplace behaviour.
Students will also learn about temperature and time control before exploring maintenance, cleaning and sanitizing procedures in more detail.

Module Three: Working With Food Safely
This outlines best practices for food safety at each stage of the food handling process, including maintaining food premises and equipment, pest control and waste disposal. Students will also learn how to receive, check, store and handle food safely.

Module Four: Managing Your Food Safety Plan
The final module of the course is designed to give participants a better understanding of Food Safety Plans and HACCP principles.

Assessment and certification
The whole course takes just a few hours to complete, including the 60-minute exam. Immediately after passing the exam, students may request their Food Handler Certificate, which they will typically receive within an hour.
The CIFS Food Handler Certificate is nationally recognized, allowing individuals to work as a Food Handler in any province or territory.
